Africa Football:Ivory Coast, Mali renew old rivalry

African champions Ivory Coast will attempt to keep their momentum going when they face arch-rivals Mali in the African Nations Championship semifinal in Rwanda on Thursday.
The Elephants, who have twice failed to go beyond the group stage in the biennial championship, confirmed their place with a stunning 3-0 extra-time win over another West African side Cameroon in the quarterfinals.
The victory, which came hot on the heels of their 4-1 demolition of Gabon in the group phase, proved the Ivorian dominant form under new coach Michel Dussuyer, who has been full of praise for the team's grit and performance.
"The Ivory Coast are gaining momentum," the Frenchman said after the match against Cameroon. "We still need to fight to push back our limits."
Mali also showed they were no pushovers in their 2-1 comeback win over pre-tournament favourites and former title holders, Tunisia, to reach their first-ever Chan semifinals.
The Eagles are expected to rely on their forwards Mamadou Sissoko and Aly Malle, who was a member of the youth team that finished runner-up to Nigeria at the Fifa U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 last November.
The match at Kigali's Stade Regional Nyamirambo will mark the 33rd meeting in international football between the two teams.
Cameroon drew 1-1 with Mali in the group phase of the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who face off in the first semifinal at the Amahoro national stadium on Wednesday, prevailed on penalties and extra-time respectively, to qualify to the last four.
The Syli Nationale, making their debut in the competition, dominated former African Cup of Nations champions Zambia, before winning 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out after regulation and extra time.
After saving two penalties, Guinea goalkeeper Abdul Aziz Keita scored the decisive spot kick, to send his team into the semifinal.
DRCongo, boasting an array of players from the country's two dominant clubs – TP Mazembe and AS Vita Club – will be without their inspirational forward Heritier Luvumbu.
The AS Vita club star picked up a serious knee injury in the 2-1 extra-time winner over hosts Rwanda in the quarterfinal.
The Florent Ibenge-coached side have been tight from the frontline with Luvumbu, Guy Bolingi and Meshack Elia playing the instrumental roles in their campaign.

South Africa:Bafana mark 20th anniversary

The 3rd of February marks the 20th anniversary since Bafana Bafana lifted the coveted Africa Cup of Nations trophy on home soil with a heart-stopping 2-0 win over Tunisia at a packed FNB Stadium.
With South African Football Association (SAFA)’s Vision 2022 in full throttle, Technical Director and the man who led the country to that historic win, Neil Tovey, says the country is heading back to the top and implored everyone to embrace the ambitious idea.
“When we took to the field, little did we know we were creating a piece of history on the day, history that would define this country for years to come.
“We took to the field with no pressure at all and our intention was just to win the game. We never knew it would take ages to repeat the same feat but with Vision 2022, I am glad and hopeful that we are headed back to the top again,” said Tovey.
The former Bafana Bafana captain said 1996 was the greatest moment of his sporting career and thinking about receiving the trophy from the late Father of the Nation, Nelson Mandela, still gives him goosebumps.
“Images of the team receiving the trophy and celebrating the win are still idolised across the continent and the globe and one cannot ask for a better sporting memory.”

Winning coach Clive Barker says memories of 1996 come once in a lifetime and his only regret is the passing on of Sizwe Motaung and John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu.
“I would have loved the two to be part of the 20th anniversary of this great sporting feat as they both played pivotal roles in that achievement. I remember vividly Shoes playing as a man possessed in the semifinal win over Ghana which earned him the man-of-the-match award,” remembers Barker.
“It was tremendous for the country, more so with rugby having won the World Cup a year earlier. But it was the first win over Cameroon that set the tone for the entire tournament.
“All in all, we had a special bunch of players, a group of players that was intent on achieving something for the country. In all this however, we must not forget the role played by the late Nelson Mandela in encouraging the players - he literally was the 12th player during the tournament,” added Barker.
Safa President Dr Danny Jordaan also recalled the 1996 win and promised the nation that the good times are around the corner once again.
“If one looks at the way our junior teams have performed on the continent, one will believe that Vision 2022 is the bedrock on which future success will be built.
“Our under-17s qualified for the World Cup in Chile, our under-20s won the Commonwealth Cup in Russia and missed the World Cup in New Zealand by a whisker and the under-23s are off to the 2016 Rio Olympics together with Banyana Banyana.
“The future is looking bright again and our national teams are beginning to compete with major players on the globe,” said the Safa President.
Dr Jordaan also revealed that the entire squad, the technical team and support staff will be honoured later this year at a gala dinner. The details will be announced soon.

USA: Man Arrested for Trying to Turn Himself in for Reward Money

A Macon fugitive is behind bars after calling the local crime stoppers on himself in an attempt to collect a $500 reward check. 65 year old Ronald Jackson is currently being held in the Houston County Detention Center with no bond. According to local authorities, Jackson has been wanted after being connected with a string of home invasions across Bibb County.

Chelsea:Terry to leave Chelsea at end of season

Chelsea captain John Terry dropped a bombshell on Sunday by announcing he will leave at the end of the season after the club decided not to renew his contract.
"I was in (for talks) last week before the Arsenal game and it is not going to be extended," Terry, 35, told reporters after his side's 5-1 win at second-tier Milton Keynes Dons in the FA Cup fourth round.
"It's not going to be a fairytale ending. I'm not going to retire at Chelsea. It's going to be elsewhere, which it took me a couple of days to get over."
Terry has made 696 appearances for Chelsea and is the club's most successful captain, having won four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the 2012 Champions League and the 2013 Europa League.
He was named in the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Team of the Season after leading Chelsea to last season's league title, but his performances this campaign have not been to the same standard, mirroring the London club's slide down the league standings.
He could now follow former England teammates David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole by moving to the United States.

But the centre-back, who signed a one-year contract extension last season, wants to go out in style by lifting the FA Cup for a sixth time and helping Chelsea climb the league table from 14th place.
"It's my last run in the FA Cup, so I want to make it a good one," he said.
"It's a big season for me and I want to push on – not just in this competition, but in the Premier League as well.
"I knew before the Arsenal game (which Chelsea won 1-0), so mentally I've kind of accepted it. We just have to move on and climb the league.
"They said that when the new manager comes in, things might change. It's a no at the minute.
"I needed to know now like I have done every January and sometimes it takes a couple of months to get done. Unfortunately, it was a no."

Chelsea are currently in a state of flux, having appointed Guus Hiddink on an interim basis after Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager for the second time in December.
But while Mourinho's long-term successor will not be coaching Terry, the former England captain said that he would not join another Premier League club.
"The club will move on," he said. "No player is ever bigger than the club. Ideally I would have loved to stay, but the club's moving in a different direction. No doubt they'll sign one or two great centre-backs.
"I want to come back as a Chelsea supporter in years to come with my kids and see the team doing great.
"Unfortunately that's not going to be with me, but I want to see the team do well. It's going to be my last year and I want to go out at the top."
He added: "I couldn't play for another Premier League club. It will be elsewhere for sure. I don't know where and I leave that to the people in charge. It certainly won't be in the Premier League."
Terry's impending departure means that Chelsea will lose the last remaining element from the team built by Mourinho that won back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006.
Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech have all since moved on, leaving Terry, who made his debut in October 1998, as the sole player branching the two generations.
A brave, no-nonsense centre-back in the finest English traditions, Terry is an iconic figure at Stamford Bridge, where a banner proclaims him: "CAPTAIN. LEADER. LEGEND."
But his 78-cap England career ended in September 2012 when he retired from international football after the Football Association charged him with racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, brother of his England teammate Rio Ferdinand.

President Dilma Rousseff has called on the whole of Brazilian society to help combat the spread of the Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects.


Ms Rousseff said national mobilisation was needed to eliminate the mosquitoes that spread the virus, and urged community groups and unions to help.
Zika is thought to cause a form of infant brain damage, microcephaly.
Three to four million people could be infected with Zika in the Americas this year, experts have warned.
Ms Rousseff rejected comments made by her health minister earlier this week, who said Brazil was badly losing the fight against the virus.
But Brazil is the country worst affected by the Zika outbreak, with 270 cases of microcephaly confirmed by the health ministry and 3,448 being investigated.
